Blinky Palermo: Retrospective 1964–1977 opens at LACMA this fall, before traveling to the Hirshhorn in the spring, and Dia:Beacon and Bard next summer. Curator Lynne Cooke gives a talk on October 26th.
The catalog, edited by Cooke, Karen Kelly, and Barbara Schröder, has contributions from Benjamin H.D. Buchloh, Lynne Cooke, Suzanne Hudson, Susanne Küper, and James Lawrence. Last year, Richter Verlag published Blinky Palermo: To the People of New York City, with texts by Cooke, Anne Rorimer, Pia Gottschaller, and Jaleh Mansoor (notes by Steven Alexander).
In 2009, Yale published Christine Mehring’s book, Blinky Palermo: Abstraction of an Era (reviewed by Anna Lovatt, Burlington Magazine and James van Dyke, German Studies Review). The article “Decoration and Abstraction in Blinky Palermo’s Wall Paintings” was in Grey Room 39 (winter 2005), and “Four of a kind: The Art of Blinky Palermo” in Artforum (October 2002).
A 2007-2008 exhibition in Düsseldorf (catalog from DuMont) was reviewed by Colin Lang in Artforum and Catrin Lorch in Frieze. sediment 15 (2008) published documentation. Zwirner & Wirth mounted a 2007 New York show of prints and multiples (reviewed by Jaleh Mansoor). Gloria Moure edited the catalog for a 2003 exhibition in Barcelona and London (reviewed by Cooke in the Burlington Magazine, Jan Verwoert in Frieze, and Brooks Adams in Art in America).
A 2006 conference was held at the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt. Pia Gottschaller, Palermo: Inside his Images, appeared in 2004; “To the people …” Sprechen über Blinky Palermo (1943 – 1977): Gespräche mit Freunden und Zeitzeugen in 2003; and Thomas Lange, Dickicht des Materials, Gradnetz des Bildes: Palermo, Bildidee und Werkbegriff in 2000.
Bernhart Schwenk published Gleichnisse des Unerklärlichen: zur Malerei von Blinky Palermo in 1990, and Franz Dahlem, Evelyn Weiss, and Max Wechsler published Blinky Palermo 1943-1977 in 1989.
