Documenting Contemporary Chinese Art

The Asian Art Archive (AAA) and the Museum of Modern Art have collaborated on an archive and publication documenting contemporary Chinese art.

The archive, entitled Materials of the Future: Documenting Contemporary Chinese Art from 1980-1990, includes documents available at the AAA library in Hong Kong; a set of interviews; a documentary film; and a website, China1980s.org. Among the interviews excerpted online are those with Fei Dawei, Gao Minglu, Gu Wenda, Hou Hanru, Huang Yongping, Martina Koppel-Yang, Wang Guangyi, Xu Bing, and Zhang Peili.

The publication, Contemporary Chinese Art: Primary Documents, edited by Wu Hung with Peggy Wang, is available from Duke ($40, paper), the MoMA Store, and Amazon.

A discussion at MoMA on October 15th will include Hang Rui, Jane DeBevoise, Lin Tianmiao, and Wu Hung. September discussions in Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai included participants Chen Tong, Doryun Chong, Jane Debevoise, Wang Aihe, Wu Hung, Xu Tan, Song Dong, Huang Rui, Xu Bing, Wu Shanzhuan, Shi Yong, and Yu Youhan.
