Events of the Self: Portraiture and Social Identity

Events of the Self: Portraiture and Social Identity is the inaugural exhibition of contemporary African photography at the Walther Collection in Burlafingen, Germany.

The catalog, published by Steidl, includes contributions from Okwui Enwezor, Virginia Heckert, Kobena Mercer, Chika Okeke-Agulu, Gabriele Conrath-Scholl and Deborah Willis, and a conversation between William Hartshorn and Artur Walther.

Sections of the exhibition are devoted to Rotimi Fani-Kayode; Seydou Keïta and August Sander; Bernd and Hilla Becher, Malick Sidibé, and J. D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere; and Sammy Baloji, Oladélé Ajiboyé Bamgboyé, Yto Barrada, Candice Breitz, Allan deSouza, Theo Eshetu, Samuel Fosso, David Goldblatt, Kay Hassan, Romuald Hazoumè, Pieter Hugo, Maha Maamoun, Boubacar Touré Mandémory, Salem Mekuria, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Zanele Muholi, James Muriuki, Ingrid Mwangi, Grace Ndiritu, Jo Ractliffe, Berni Searle, Mikhael Subotzky, Guy Tillim, Hentie van der Merwe and Nontsikelelo (Lolo) Veleko.
